Which train

Nozomi and Mizuho Nozomi and Mizuho: The fastest services on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu lines: they stop only at the major stations. They are the only JR trains excluded from the Japan Rail Pass. Source

Most Nozomi run through from Tokyo to Hakata by way of Hiroshima: it is the only way to do this journey on a single train with no change. As everywhere on the network, the Nozomi is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass, even on a full-fare ticket. A pass holder can still take it by buying a special top-up ticket sold only to pass holders, around ¥6,500 (about $41) for this stretch. Fare source

Hikari, Kodama or Sakura Hikari and Sakura: Same rails as the Nozomi, a few more stops. Covered by the Japan Rail Pass, with no supplement. Source Kodama: The service that stops at every station on the line. The slowest of the three, and covered by the Japan Rail Pass. Source

A combined price of two tickets, ¥13,870 (about $88) then ¥9,710 (about $62) with a change at Shin-Osaka. More expensive in total than the direct Nozomi, but entirely covered by the Japan Rail Pass, with no supplement to pay. Fare source
