A bed, a desk, a fridge, a molded one-piece bathroom, and wifi. The national chains run the same floor plan in every city, which makes the room predictable from one town to the next, down to exactly where the kettle sits. That predictability is the product. You are not choosing a hotel so much as choosing a chain, and the chain has already decided what the room looks like.

This is the only one of the four types whose price does not move with the number of people. A couple halves it where a ryokan doubles it. Run that arithmetic before you decide anything else, because it reverses the ranking of the four types the moment a second traveler joins you.

Book early and refundable, then watch the price
Supply is deep and the rate follows demand, day by day. Even at the last minute there is almost always a room somewhere in a large city. A ryokan calendar, next to that, leaves no room at all: its inventory opens about six months out, empties in the order the dates were taken, and does not come back once it is gone. Booking early on a refundable rate and then watching beats locking a price six months out. It is the opposite instinct to the ryokan, on the same trip, for the same nights.
