Ryokan in Takayama
Takayama fits inside a twenty-minute walk. The district hardly matters. What matters is the kind of bed, and above all the date.

The old town or the streets around the station both work, since everything is on foot. What changes everything is the date: during the two matsuri, on April 14 and 15 and again on October 9 and 10, the town fills up a very long time ahead.

For its size the town has a lot of traditional beds. Dinner is why most people book one.

Dinner is the point, and the town closes early
Restaurants in the old town pull the shutters down early in the evening, so a ryokan with dinner is not a luxury here: it is often the only way to eat properly. Dinner is half board, priced per person, booked with the room, and it puts Hida beef in front of you whether or not that was the plan.
Minshuku are the same idea, cheaper
A minshuku is a family house with a few rooms, simpler than a ryokan and usually cheaper, with breakfast almost always included. Same tatami, same per-person price, fewer courses at dinner.
In town, or out in the valley
The addresses in and around the old town put you five minutes from the wooden streets and the morning markets. The isolated ryokan on the Hida side have their own hot spring and their own shuttle, which is booked with the room and never on the day. You gain the bath and lose the evening walk.
How to choose one without a name
We never recommend an address. Three questions settle it: in town or out in the valley; ryokan or minshuku, which is mostly a question of how many courses you want at dinner; and whether your dates fall on a matsuri, in which case the honest answer may be to sleep in Toyama or Nagoya and come in for the day.
