Where to stay in Nara
Nara is almost always a day trip. People come from Kyoto or Osaka and leave again. Sleeping there is not decided for the town itself, but for what the park becomes once the coaches have gone.

Kintetsu Nara puts you five minutes from the park. That makes it the priciest area in town. JR Nara to pay less, at the cost of a fifteen-minute walk. Naramachi for the old houses and a quiet evening, ten minutes from the park.
The districts, and what they change
Two stations, two price levels, and an old quarter in between.
| District | Who it suits | What to expect | Getting there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Around Kintetsu Nara | Arriving and being at the park at once | The station is underground and comes out a few steps from Kofukuji and the park. The most sought-after area in town, so the most expensive. | Kintetsu from Kyoto, 35 to 45 min depending on the train |
| Around JR Nara | Tight budget, or a rail pass | Fifteen to twenty minutes on foot west of the park. More chain hotels, lower rates, and the JR line to Kyoto. | JR from Kyoto, about 45 min |
| Naramachi | Old houses, a quiet evening | The old merchant quarter, south of the park. Townhouses turned into cafes and rooms, and almost nothing open late. | Ten to fifteen minutes on foot from Kintetsu Nara |
Journey times are the operators' own, with no connection or waiting time, so check the day's timetable before you set off: night trains and airport buses run to a different grid.
What there is in Nara, and how much of it
The hotel stock is small. It settled around visitors who leave in the evening.
Town hotel
The most commonBilled per room, around the two stations. The supply is limited for a town this well known, and rates climb fast in season.

No single site shows all of Japan. We explain who gives access to what, and which one fits your case.
Which site to choose for your case →Most visitors come for the day, and the hotel stock settled around that. When a date fills up in Nara there is no other area to switch to, as there is in Kyoto or Osaka: you go back to sleep in one of those two, and lose the morning at the park.
When ryokan and train bookings open
Nara fills at the same time as Kyoto, for the blossom and for the autumn colors. Outside those two windows a room can still be found a few weeks out.

How the opening calendar works, and why an empty calendar is not a full one: inns here open their rooms about 6 months ahead, train seats go on sale exactly 1 month ahead, and nothing at all exists before those two dates. Search earlier and the page comes back blank.
The night in Kyoto, forty minutes away
Most travelers sleep in Kyoto and come to Nara for the day. Where you sleep there decides what time you arrive here.
Kyoto ryokan and machiya →Bookings for your dates open on a fixed date. We write that day.
Say you're after the cherry blossoms in April 2027: ryokan inns open around October. On the day, you get an email, you book, and it's done.
Tanuki Trip never books and never takes payment on your behalf, and the links to booking platforms on
this page are plain search links rather than partner links, so nothing here changes what you end up
paying or what we write about it.
You book it yourself, wherever you want.
