Where to stay in Kyoto
In Kyoto the district is not chosen for what stands around it. It is chosen for how you get home in the evening, when the buses are full.

Around Kyoto station if you arrive from Kansai and string day trips together: everything leaves from there. Kawaramachi to eat out and walk home. Higashiyama for the townhouses and the quiet mornings, as long as you accept higher rates and streets full by daylight.
What a ryokan means in Kyoto
This is the city where the word covers the most different things, and where reading the meals line before comparing two prices matters more than it does anywhere else in Japan.

Half of them serve no dinner
Elsewhere in Japan a ryokan serves dinner and breakfast. It quotes per person. Kyoto rents out whole machiya townhouses under the same word. Often no meals at all, and priced per house. Two listings at the same price can therefore mean completely different things.
The tax is worked out before the meals
Kyoto applies the highest accommodation tax in the country, and it is worked out on the room price, meals excluded. A half-board ryokan therefore often falls in a lower tax band than its advertised price suggests.
Where they are, and what that costs you
The traditional houses are concentrated in Higashiyama, around Gion and Kiyomizu, and in the northern lanes of Nishijin. Higashiyama is beautiful before eight in the morning and saturated afterwards, with few shops open late; Nishijin is quieter and cheaper, and puts you back on the subway to have dinner. Neither is on the Karasuma line, which is the one that spares you the buses.
How to choose one without a name
We never recommend an address. Four questions do most of the work here: are meals included or not; is the price per person or for the whole house; which line gets you home after dinner; and how early in the morning you want the street to yourself. Filter on those, and let the photos do the rest.

Kyoto fits in a rectangle, and crossing it at temple hours is slow.

Which site to choose for your case →The city is mostly seen by bus. The bus is full at temple hours. Staying on the Karasuma line or on the Keihan solves it for the whole trip, even if the address looks less appealing on the map than a lane in Higashiyama does.

When ryokan and train bookings open
Kyoto is the city where the gap widens fastest between what is on sale and what is still available: on an autumn weekend, the two have nothing to do with each other.
