The short answer

Along the canal, between the station and the baths, you are a short walk from everything: the yukata, the wooden clogs and the walk between two baths are the evening itself. Near the station will do if you arrive late. Almost everything here is half board and priced per person: a per-room rate barely exists.

Your ryokan is your ticket

The property hands you a yukata and the pass to the seven public baths. Both are part of the rate. Sleeping outside the town to save a night takes away a good part of the point, and the walk between baths in a yukata is not something you do from a hotel in Toyooka.

Half board, per person, almost without exception

Dinner and breakfast are included and the price is per person. A room-only rate barely exists in the town.

Which end of the canal

The town is one street and one canal, and the two ends are not the same. Near the station is the practical end, two minutes from the first bath, with less charm. Along the canal are the willows, the bridges and most of the baths within a short walk, which is where the yukata walk makes sense. The bigger properties out towards the ropeway have private baths and their own shuttle, and cost you the evening walk.

How to choose one without a name

We never recommend an address. Three questions settle it: canal or station, which is charm against convenience; how late you arrive, since dinner is served early; and whether you are coming between November and March, when crab season fills the town and the price of the same room changes completely.
