Japan in May

Golden Week fills the first week with clustered public holidays. The rest of the month is markedly quieter. Our pick, once May 6 is behind you. Golden Week runs to May 6, then the country empties. Okinawa is already sliding into the rains.

The dates in May

May 2027 has 3 public holidays and one date when something is happening, and the nights before those holidays are the dearest of the month: ryokan charge their Saturday rate for them.

Mon May 3
Public holiday: Constitution Memorial Day

It sits in the middle of Golden Week, with Greenery Day and Children's Day right behind it, which is what turns the first week of May into the busiest stretch of the spring.

Tue May 4
Public holiday: Greenery Day

The second day of Golden Week, and with two more public holidays stacked behind it, the parks and the Japanese gardens are packed for the rest of the week.

nothing to plan around

If your dates can move: shift by a day to miss the nights before a holiday, once booking opens.
If they are fixed: those nights will be the first to go on the day booking opens. The rest of the month can wait.

Where to start

The order matters more than how early you get to it.

Kyoto and the small stops first

Kyoto, Kanazawa, Takayama, and any night in a ryokan: few rooms, and the whole of Japan is aiming at the same dates, so this is where it is decided first, not in Tokyo.

Tokyo and Osaka can wait

Tens of thousands of rooms. These cities are never really full. The simplest approach is still to book it all in one go, on free cancellation rates for whatever might still move.

Three questions about May

What is the weather like in May? In Tokyo, 24°C (75°F) in the afternoon and 15°C (59°F) at night on average, while at the same moment Sapporo sits at 18°C (64°F) and Naha at 27°C (81°F). In Okinawa, in the south, the rainy season starts around May 10 and ends around June 21. The rest of the country is not there yet.

Is May cheaper? Across the cities we track, hotel occupancy sits at the average for the year. The price range for the month is in the budget block, city by city.

Does Golden Week carry on into May? Only to May 6, and after that date the country empties out, which makes it one of the quietest months of the entire year, despite everything its high-season reputation suggests.

Calendar

Sumo tickets: six tournaments, six sale dates

Six 15-day tournaments a year. Three sit in Tokyo. Each has its own sale date, and the gap between that sale and the first bout runs from 29 to 57 days.

The worst time to visit Japan, week by week

Three weeks carry almost all of the pressure, and one of them is not even a public holiday. The other 49 are far more open than the month-level lists suggest.

How to book hotels in Japan: when sales open

The costly mistake is reading an empty calendar as a full one. Inns open about 6 months out, train seats 1 month out, and nothing exists before that.

It counts people rather than rooms, and dinner is nearly always inside it, served at a fixed time that you pick when you book rather than on the evening itself.
